About the Introductory Subjects

The Introductory Subjects included three required courses: Lecture on Life in Campus and Society, Introduction to Data Science, and Introduction to Region Studies.  These course are offered, normally, at the first quarter of a student’s first year.

Lecture on Life in Campus aim to help newly enrolled students smoothly adjust to their new lives both in university and society, so that they may acquire more favorable learning attitudes and develop an appropriate life-style as a university student.  They are also designed to help freshmen lead a fulfilling life with a career plan in mind.

Lecture on Life in Campus and Society, which includes a variety of topics related to students’ university and social lives, is offered in an omnibus style. For further information on each of the lectures, see the syllabus on the university’s website.  Students are required to access on-line learning materials for the course.  Furthermore, each department may add special topics to the courses offered to their students.

Introduction to Data Science requires students to use e-learning for the first time at the university.  The contents of the course consist of three major topics: information ethics and network security, academic information search, and information technology specifically for each department.  Students are requested to bring their own laptop computer to class (Some departments may allow their students to use the desktop computers in Emerging Media Initiative).  Students in the medical department must follow the instructions provided by their department since classrooms and schedules may change after the first half of the course

The goals of Introduction to Region Studies includes connecting students’ academic fields to local communities and societies; as a result, students become better prepared to pursue their learning at the university, with their future careers in mind.
